Yang Haoran felt a faint sense of disappointment wash over him. After a moment, he adjusted his mindset. He wasnβt truly an inexperienced virgin, nor was he all talk; he was a man of action.
He tore off a piece of paper, grabbed a pen, and quickly scribbled a few words. Under the desk, he stealthily touched the girl’s fair hand and firmly pushed the note into her palm.
Ji Youxin could no longer pretend he didn’t exist, though her expression remained serene and unhurried as she unfolded the note. On it, a few words were written in messy scrawl.
“Hello, we meet again.”
Her brows furrowed slightly. Under the desk, she gestured toward him with her hand. Yang Haoran was puzzled for a moment before following her gaze and realizing what she wanted. He hurriedly placed a pen from his own desk into her open palm.
Watching the girl pick up the pen to write, Yang Haoran couldn’t help but feel curious. What would she write?
The note was soon passed back to him. Yang Haoran felt a stir of anticipation as he unfolded it. Below his message, written in neat, delicate, almost embroidered characters, were a few words.
“Who are you?” Yang Haoran was taken aback. He recalled their first meeting days ago when she had seemingly smiled at him. But back then, he was just one face in the crowd; that smile might not have been meant for him. While she had left a deep impression on him, she likely didn’t remember some random passerby. A wave of dejection washed over him.
But immediately, he brushed aside these negative thoughts. One shouldn’t undervalue oneself. Even delusional confidence was better than insecurity.
He picked up his pen and wrote back, then slipped the note into the girl’s hand again. He met her puzzled gaze; she seemed genuinely not to recognize him, and appeared slightly surprised by his forwardness.
Ji Youxin unfolded the note. Another line of crooked writing greeted her.
“You’ve forgotten? Over ten days ago, we ran into each other at school. You smiled at me. I thought you had taken a liking to me.”
The boy’s cheekiness drew a knowing smile from the girl. She picked up her pen and wrote: “Then, have you taken a liking to me?” Seeing this line on the note, Yang Haoran was somewhat surprised by the girl’sζ΄θ± (composure and directness). After a moment’s hesitation, he wrote: “What do you think?”
“Well, if you were me, do you think you would fancy yourself?” The girl’s handwriting was still tidy, elegant and beautiful, very much like her person.
“Yes.”
Yang Haoran replied shamelessly.
“Hehe⦔ wrote the girl.
Staring at those two words, “hehe,” Yang Haoran felt his face grow hot. It seemed he had been presumptuous. But a momentary setback couldn’t crush the boy’s indomitable spirit.
“I think you would fancy me. You can interpret this as delusional confidence. Just like what you said on the podium earlier, I feel I am that white bird riding the wave crest with you. You said it yourself, so you came here, and coincidentally there was an empty seat next to me. Doesn’t that mirror the pair of white birds on the wave crest? You came here, and I was waiting for you!” Yang Haoran wrote a long passage, pouring out his fervently beating heart onto the paper, conveying his emotions through the pen, onto the page, and into the girl’s hand.
The girl looked at the lengthy message. Despite the messy handwriting, the boy’s sincerity was evident. She placed the note into her desk drawer and did not reply.
The boy’s note sank like a stone, vast and powerless, seemingly unable to stir even a ripple in the girl’s emotions.
In the end, this brief exchange, conveyed on paper, ended on paper.
After class, Ji Youxin was surrounded by a group of female students, all chattering away, asking her various questions. The girl’s expression remained serene throughout as she patiently answered them. When faced with questions she couldn’t answer, she simply smiled and let them pass.
The male students felt frustrated and powerless. Watching Ji Youxin encircled, they were on the verge of tears. What a perfect opportunity, ruined by the female classmates!
The day passed uneventfully. Although Yang Haoran wanted to talk to Ji Youxin, she was constantly surrounded by her female classmates. The limited break times were almost entirely occupied by them.
Yang Haoran thought it over and passed two more notes during breaks. The girl didn’t look at either, simply placing them in her drawer.
As the saying goes, once, twice, but not a third time. Seeing this, Yang Haoran reined in his restless heart. Being persistently bothersome wouldn’t help in pursuing Ji Youxin. His mother had taught him to maintain an appropriate sense ofεε―Έ (propriety/distance).
Although he had never seriously pursued a girl before, he felt his mother’s words made sense.
Time flows like water, fleeting and swift. Throughout the day, the girl did not exchange a single word with the boy. Their only communication remained confined to the notes.
School ended in the afternoon. Yang Haoran left the classroom without any lingering hesitation,ζ½ζ΄ (composedly) following the crowd out of the school.
He didn’t notice that as he left the classroom, Ji Youxin’s gaze remained fixed on his retreating figure, the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, sketching out a serene smile.
…In the fading glow of the sunset, Yang Haoran strolled along the path home. The dusk, with its enchanting play of light and shadow, stretched his silhouette long and narrow. Alone and solitary, yet somehow the future seemed full of promise.
After returning home, scenes from the day replayed in Yang Haoran’s mind. Ji Youxin. A lovely name, perfectly suited to its owner.
In the evening, the family ate dinner together harmoniously. For some reason, Yang Haoran felt his mother’s gaze towards him was quite hostile, as if she very much wanted to vent her anger by hitting him, but couldn’t find a reason. He found it baffling. He hadn’t offended her. Was she still angry about what he said last night?
Liu Ruoxi had been unable to focus on her work at the company all day. Thinking about the system’s next phase of tasks filled her with vexation and shame. Consequently, she even found her innocent son irritating to look at.
After dinner, Yang Haoran’s intuition told him to make himself scarce. He hurried back to his room. He had a strong feeling that his mother’s look meant something was going to happen today, but he was clueless as to what, and even more afraid to ask her.
After Liu Ruoxi finished cleaning up the dishes for the family, she returned to her bedroom with a calm expression. Once inside her room, alone and unobserved, her stunning face flushed slightly. Her gaze turned towards emptiness.

Liu Ruoxi had anticipated this day, but hadn’t expected it to be so imminent. After completing Mission 2 yesterday, her task panel had refreshed. The time limit was one day, and now only a few hours remained.
Thinking of the system’s task, Liu Ruoxi took a deep breath, trying to soothe her agitated heart. At the company, she had already decided how to complete this mission. It was just that the taboo of mother-son incest was ultimately inescapable…
